This is where I’m going to ruffle some white coats. The vast majority of doctors don’t understand the root causes of weight gain, weight stigma, or what it’s like to live in a larger body. I’m a doctor, and for many years, I didn’t understand the problem, or the treatment.

Here’s what I discovered: Diets and exercise are NOT a “treatment” for being in a larger body.

In fact, going this route can make life worse for the patient. The truth is, weight bias in medical and social contexts wrongly equates thinness with health. Therefore, people in larger bodies are often prescribed weight loss as the gold standard treatment for a healthy, meaningful life.

Even if you’ve been a chronic dieter for decades, you can still find peace with your body.

Reason 3: You believe in good and bad body sizes.

Everywhere you turn you see filtered perfection. Sculpted, slim, seemingly ageless bodies are not only touted as beautiful, our society DEMANDS your body to look like this to be accepted. Otherwise, you are treated as less than. Even with recent body positivity trends, larger bodies (really any deviation outside of the strict parameters) are stigmatized.

Hi, I’m Dr. Ashley White

My appetite does not run my life. In fact, it’s my superpower.
I’ve been a fat doctor, a thin doctor, a pregnant doctor, and everything in-between.

I’m acutely aware of this spectrum because I can’t recall a time in my life when my size wasn’t a factor. It has always been a core influencer of how I’ve been treated, received, and understood.

The messages I got, even in my family with larger bodies, was this: “Size matters and smaller is better.”

I’ve been on all of the diets you can name since the tender age of 12 and have been in recovery from an eating disorder for over a decade now.

Even as a physician, I struggled with my weight, body image, obsessive food thoughts, and eating.

Everything changed for me when I realized my appetite was a SIGNAL and not a COMMAND.

That empowered me to create eating experiences and make eating decisions that were intentional and rooted in my values. And it allowed me to stay motivated with my goals for health and longevity.
By remapping my process around hunger and eating, I freed up my mind, energy, and resources and released the pain and shame around my hunger.
I reverse engineered my appetite from thoughts to experience and developed a thought system that’s quick and easy and can be applied to any situation — no matter the circumstances. The intention is not to control your body, but to invite you to experience your appetite for what it is and be free to live your life.

These days, a very small part of my brain is dedicated to food and eating. The rest is available to focus on my work and be present for my family and friends — to give my time and energy to what matters to me.
